ATLANTA (AP) — Most of Georgia is under a tornado watch as menacing storms push across the state.

The National Weather Service has placed 89 Georgia counties under a tornado watch until 11 a.m. Tuesday. The watch stretches from Georgia's southwest corner to its northeast corner and includes Atlanta, Albany, Macon, and Athens. The Weather Service says a tornado warning was issued for the Columbus area early Tuesday when radar indicated a strong thunderstorm with rotation. The warning was set to expire at 5:45 a.m.

Meanwhile, a flash flood warning was in effect in northwest Georgia after up to 3 inches of rain fell overnight and up to 2 inches more was expected by daybreak.

Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in Georgia overnight, freeing up state resources for storm response.
