The stockings have been hung in homes from Maine to Michigan and into Canada, with hopes that electricity soon would be there.
An ice storm last weekend knocked out power to half a million homes and businesses, and crews have been working to restore service by the end of the week.
But it was little comfort to those who were supposed to host family members for Christmas. Some canceled their plans and others moved their holiday celebrations to a hotel.
It appears the bad weather isn't ready to take a break. More snow is forecast to roll into the Great Lakes and Midwest by Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said.
