WASHINGTON (AP) — In search of a new standard-bearer, evangelicals are looking for a lot more than opposition to gay marriage and abortion. At an annual meeting of social conservatives, a new wave of Senate Republicans auditioned before prominent conservative activists and faith leaders, deriding President Barack Obama's health care law and his steering of the economy and foreign policy. Conservatives at the annual Values Voter Summit heard from a slew of Republican lawmakers, including Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Many stressed pocketbook issues that resonate with families, and foreign policy issues in the Middle East. The conferences came as congressional Republicans sought agreement with Obama on a way to end the government shutdown and avoid an economic default.
