Arson is being cited as the cause of a blaze late last night that destroyed a house in Eastman.

Eastman Fire Chief Carl Johnson said the house was unoccupied as the tenants of the house at 5709 Neese Street had been evicted just a week before. No one was injured in the fire.

Johnson said the fire appeared to have been started in numerous places inside the house just before 10 pm Thursday.

Eighteen members of the Eastman Fire Department used two engines to battle the fire for more than two hours before it was extinguished.

Johnson says he has contacted the state fire marshal’s office and an arson investigator, along with members of the fire department and the Eastman Police Department will investigate the fire.
