BAGHDAD (AP) — Another wave of explosions has torn through predominantly Shiite Muslim areas in and around Baghdad today, leaving death and destruction in their wake.

Authorities say the blasts hit crowded market places, commercial districts and car repair shops, killing at least 33 people.

The attacks are part of escalating violence since a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in April. The bloodshed in the country has reached heights unseen since the country teetered on the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but insurgent groups frequently target civilians in public areas in an attempt to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government and stir up sectarian tensions.

Police say the deadliest attack was a car bombing inside an auto shop that killed seven people and wounded 14 others.
