SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's attorney general is appealing a federal court decision that overturned San Diego County's concealed weapons restrictions.

Kamala D. Harris filed the appeal Thursday with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

A three-judge panel of that court ruled Feb. 13 that people seeking concealed weapons permits needed to only cite a need for self-defense.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department had required applicants to show good cause to carry, such as working in a dangerous job.

Sheriff Bill Gore said he wouldn't challenge the ruling, but Harris is asking the full appellate court to reverse the decision of its panel.

Harris says local law enforcement must be able to use discretion to determine who can carry a concealed weapon.
