SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is taking on a new high-profile role that could help a future White House campaign. But 2014 comes first.

Christie was elected chairman of the Republican Governors Association on Thursday. The new job will let Christie travel the country in support of other Republicans running for re-election or looking to win governors' races.

Christie won a sweeping re-election earlier this month in his Democratic-leaning state, drumming up more interest in a potential presidential campaign. But the governor says the most important task involves the 36 governors' seats being contested next year — not 2016.

Christie says Republican leaders start thinking about 2016, in his words, "at our own peril." He says Republicans need to focus on the 2014 campaign.
