Today kicks off fire prevention week in Georgia and this year it's about safe cooking practices.

The theme this week is "Prevent Kitchen Fires."

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department will be visiting different restraunts and speaking about ways to keep homes safe.

Statistics show about 100 people die as a result of home fires and burns in Georgia a year. National Fire Prevention Association reseach reports cooking is the leading cause of home fires.

So far this year 13 people in the state have died from an unattended cooking fire. The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department will have an opening ceremony at 11am Monday on the lower level by Macy's at the Macon Mall.
