A Fort Valley State University student and his parents are found dead in a wooded area near Augusta Tuesday.
Richmond County deputies found the bodies of 20-year old Russell Jones and his parents Edna and Roosevelt behind a Richmond elementary school after someone reported a brush fire. Their bodies were burned and found just miles away from their home in Hephzibah which is being considered a secondary crime scene. Investigators suggest the three people were murdered.
The rising FVSU junior who friends call RuJo has been enrolled a FVSU for two years. His brother Steven is a principal at Appling Middle School in Bibb County. Steven traveled to Richmond County on Tuesday. He declined to a phone interview but Steven’s friend Dominique Johnson has been in communication with him and said he’s in shock.
"The first time Steven and I talked we just shed a couple tears together,” Johnson said. I told him whatever he needed; we would try to get done. Right now they're just trying to wrap their heads around it, you know and doing what we all ought to do which is pray."
At FVSU students returning to the campus for summer school are stunned by the news.
“When I first heard I really couldn't believe it,” Russell’s friend Sabryan Timmons said. “It's like I see him all the time. Not seeing him anymore is just tragic."
Richmond County Sheriff deputies said they've had a suspect in custody since Tuesday but won't reveal their identity.
