ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia Democratic Party Chair Mike Berlon says he is preparing to step down from his position, citing concerns expressed by Democratic leaders that his personal issues have been a distraction. Berlon said Wednesday that his goal has always been "to unify Democrats" and will be working to ensure a smooth transition. Earlier in the day, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed had called for Berlon to step aside. Berlon, an attorney who became chair in 2011, has been dealing with several issues in recent weeks, including a reprimand by the State Bar of Georgia, a lawsuit filed by a client and the release of a report showing weak party finances ahead of the 2014 statewide and congressional elections.
