BERLIN (AP) — The German government is sending some top-flight military equipment to Iraq to help the Kurdish Peshmerga who are fighting Islamic State militants. Three shipments will be made starting at the end of September. They'll include high-end rifles, tank-busting weapons and armored vehicles. On Sunday, the U.S. carried out two more airstrikes against IS militants.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — The Islamist-allied Dawn of Libya group is now guarding the vacant U.S. Embassy and its residential compound in Tripoli. That's according to the commander of the militia umbrella group that wrested control of the capital and the embassy from a rival militia last week. U.S. personnel fled the embassy more than a month ago because of the fighting.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin is calling on Kiev to immediately start "substantive, meaningful" talks on a political solution to the crisis in eastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian spokesman says a border guard vessel operating in the Azov Sea was fired upon by land-based artillery. Pro-Russian rebels are undertaking a new offensive along the seacoast.

ERIE, Colo. (AP) — A National Transportation Board spokesman says all five people aboard a small plane that crashed near an airport north of Denver have died. He says the single-engine Piper PA-46 went down a few hundred yards from the Erie Municipal Airport runway just before noon on Sunday. The NTSB is investigating the crash. Erie is about 20 miles north of Denver.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Tony Stewart will now start focusing on next weekend's NASCAR race in Richmond, Virginia. His return to the track Sunday night ended only a little over halfway through his race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Stewart hit the wall twice. He skipped three NASCAR Sprint Cup races after his car struck and killed a fellow driver in upstate New York.
