The Bibb County District Attorney's Office finally gave access to WGXA on Thursday thousands of documents, pictures, and hours of interview tape related to the murder of Mercer Law grad Lauren Giddings.
Giddings was killed back in June 2011. Her neighbor and classmate Stephen McDaniel recently pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. In a written confession McDaniel says he snuck into Giddings apartment using a master key and disabling a burglar bar device Giddings used to keep her door shut. McDaniel wrote that he attacked Giddings while she was in bed and strangled her to death. He wrote that he then waited a day before dismembering her, throwing her arms, legs, and head in a trash bin near the Mercer Law School, then disposing of her torso in a trash bin near the apartment complex the two shared.
Among the pictures released Thursday were photos of the crime scene, both McDaniel's and Giddings' apartments. Pictures of scratches on McDaniel found by investigators, and the hacksaw investigators believe was used to dismember Giddings. Packaging for the hacksaw was found in McDaniel's apartment, while the actual tool was found in a storage closet on the property.
Investigators also took a picture of a woman's underwear in McDaniel's apartment, but it's unknown who they belonged to.
