GOP govs jockey for political edge in shutdown

BOSTON (AP) — Ambitious Republican governors across the nation — from New Jersey and Louisiana to Wisconsin and Michigan — are pitching themselves as can-do politicians and highlighting bipartisan records of achievement. This, with no end in sight to the federal government shutdown. Their goal: Draw a contrast with their prospective presidential challengers serving in Congress who have sided with a vocal band of Republicans whose demands that Congress defund the health care law helped trigger the shutdown. The fissures within the ranks of the possible GOP presidential candidates illustrate a broader party split.
