ATLANTA (AP) — A trial is set to begin for a Georgia lawmaker accused of claiming per diem pay and mileage reimbursements for in-state work on days when he was out of the state. The trial of state Sen. Don Balfour is set to start Monday in Fulton County Superior Court.

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Douglas County officials say a man wearing headphones has died after being hit by a train. Coroner Randy Daniel says 28-year-old Assan Reavis of Douglasville was struck as he crossed train tracks about 20 miles west of downtown Atlanta.

WAYCROSS, Ga. (AP) — A firefighter has died fighting a blaze in a vacant home in Waycross that's been ruled an arson. A spokesman for Georgia's fire marshal says firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after midnight Sunday. Authorities say 50-year-old Waycross fire Lt. Jeff Little became trapped and died.

JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — Bond has been set at $25,000 for a state social worker who police said was carrying illegal drugs while she was driving a client to a group home. Jonesboro Police Chief Franklin Allen said 38-year-old Ericka Thompson was stopped Saturday for a tag violation when an officer smelled marijuana. Allen said the officer searched the car and also found small amounts of cocaine and Oxycontin.
