Deal says the Georgia State Patrol also is sending troopers to schools where children remain stranded after spending the night there after snow began falling yesterday afternoon. He plans a briefing at 11:30 this morning at the Capitol.

ATLANTA (AP) — A winter storm has dropped more than 3 inches of snow in some areas of north Georgia.

The National Weather Service says 2.3 inches of snow fell yesterday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has declared a state of emergency as a winter storm coats the region with snow and ice. Deal's spokesman said yesterday that the declaration covers all 159 counties in the state and will help free up resources that are needed to address emergency situations as they arise.

ATLANTA (AP) — Most of the sports teams in the Deep South dodged the winter storm that hit the region.

The majority of the college basketball, NBA and NHL squads in the region were off or playing on the road yesterday when the snow, ice and freezing temperatures engulfed the Southeast.
