ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Julia Potter won the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur on Thursday at Biltmore Forest, beating Margaret Shirley in 19 holes to become the USGA's first female left-handed champion. Potter, a recently reinstated amateur from Granger, Ind., is a former University of Missouri player who spent two years on the Symetra Tour and now works as a professional event coordinator.
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Jeff Gordon won the pole Thursday night for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Gordon turned a lap at 194.308 mph to edge Kevin Harvick for his ninth pole at Charlotte, the second most in track history.
