FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Coach Mike Smith says the Atlanta Falcons can't take much satisfaction from almost rallying against the San Francisco 49ers. For Smith, Atlanta's season-long inability to play a mistake-free third quarter wiped out the gains made in an improved final period Monday night.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters will undergo season-ending Achilles surgery after getting injured in Monday's loss at San Francisco. Coach Mike Smith said Tuesday that Peters suffered a non-contact injury and likely will be sidelined until the start of the 2014 season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Panthers aren't celebrating clinching their first playoff berth since in five years. There's too much at stake this week. Carolina still needs to beat Atlanta on the road Sunday to clinch the NFC South championship, wrap up a first-round bye and secure at least one home playoff game.

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Army has hired Jeff Monken as its football coach. Monken spent the last four seasons at Georgia Southern after learning the triple-option offense under Paul Johnson during stints as an assistant at Navy and Georgia Tech. Monken posted a 38-16 record at Georgia Southern and helped guide the program's transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision.
