A Macon man wins big after entering a national home upgrade contest and receives the help of an HGTV star on restoration tips.
Steve Bel's 141-year-old Victorian home across the street from Tattnall Square Park will soon be a home improvement project. He is the winner of Dove Men + Care Hair “King of the Castle” national home upgrade contest.
“I can’t believe it,” Bell said. “I was waiting for someone to say you've been punked."
However, it’s a dream come true. Bell submitted an essay to the online contest about why he'd like to improve his home where he's lived for 16 years. Among thousands of entries, Dove crowned him "King of the Castle." Instead of choosing one of the grand prizes which includes a moat with a drawbridge, Bell is more practical. He decided on a new roof to prevent water intrusion as well as repainting the inside and outside.
"We want to maintain another 140 years so we need to take care of it," he said.
To help Bell with what may seem like a daunting task, HGTV star and home improvement expert Jonathan Scott came to Macon and offered advice.
"I think by restoring this house back to its original beauty, people who are enjoying the park and everything will look across and go wow, that's a gorgeous I don't remember that being there."
Restorations on the home are expected to begin in January.
