CAIRO (AP) — Indirect Israel-Palestinian negotiations are underway in Cairo over extending a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and ending a divade of the territory. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says "the senseless cycle of suffering" in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must end. Speaking to the U.N. General Assembly, Ban urged the warring sides to spare no effort to "turn the current calm into a durable cease-fire." And he called on the international community to support the enormous task of rebuilding Gaza, providing humanitarian aid to thousands in need, and caring for the wounded and traumatized.

And he says Russia's provocative actions are forcing the U.S. and its allies to take a close look at how NATO is structured. Hagel spoke to reporters in Germany after meeting with U.S. military leaders in Europe.
DETROIT (AP) — A Michigan jury has begun deliberating in the trial of a man who fatally shot an unarmed woman outside his home in suburban Detroit. Theodore Wafer says he shot 19-year-old Renisha McBride in self-defense after she woke him around 4:30 in the morning by banging on his doors. Prosecutors say Wafer handled his shotgun "like a toy" and should have stayed safely in his house and called police. He could face up to life in prison without parole if convicted of second-degree murder.
