One of Macon's bravest was honored today for his service.

The Macon Exchange Club recognized Garin Flanders as "Firefighter of the Year''.

Ceremonies were held at a luncheon at United Methodist Church on Pierce Avenue.

Flanders says he was on vacation when he was notified he had been tapped for the honor:

"The first thing I thought of is there's 400 other guys on that department that's just as deserving for it, but it's an honor. A Great honor. A great honor to be part of Macon-Bibb County." -- Garin Flanders

"I looked at Garin's file. Garin's file was exemplary as far as he is always there, he always has a positive approach to everything, hard working guy and he just wants to make us the best that we absolutely can be." -- Macon-Bibb County Fire Chief Marvin Riggins

Flanders said he enjoys being a firefighter and that he finds his job fulfilling.
