Hundreds of volunteers are getting prepared for greet veterans in need Friday, for the 2013 Macon Stand Down event. The stand down is designed to help out veterans by offering them a varietyu of services including food, clothing, healthcare, housing assistance, job counseling, and even legal advisory.
"Basically fellowship, so that's what we're doing, and it takes months of preparation," said VFW Post 9709 Commander Lonnie Miley.
Miley says last year 300 veterans and their families attended the event, but this year he estimates around 500 will show up.
"We want (the volunteers) to provide the most kind and courteous and thoughtful service to the veterans as they come through here," Miley said.
The event will take place on Friday September 6th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the VFW Post 9709 on 711 Key St. in Macon. Bus passes will be handed out at various locations including the Salvation Army, Macon Rescue Mission, and VA Clinic. Macon Economic Opportunity Council will also be running shuttles to the event from those locations from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
