A day of celebration turned deadly in Wheeler County Saturday leading to the first death in the Little Ocmulgee State Park.
Lamar and Elizabeth Drury were fishing near the dam on a lake in the park around 10 a.m. Saturday morning when their boat was drawn into the discharge gates by strong currents caused by recent heavy rains.
Elizabeth was able to get out of the boat but Lamar was pulled under. At least 15 organizations responded to aid in the search for Lamar and eventually found his body hours later after removing the boat from the top of the dam with heavy equipment.
April Lee, a relative of the Drury's, told the Eastman Examiner that before going under, Lamar told Elizabeth to get out of the boat quick. April says his last words to his wife were, "I love you."
