The city's new mandatory spay and neutering law is now official.

Thursday morning, Mayor Robert Reichert signed the bill into law, which requires dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age or owners will face a fine.

But there are exemptions for breeders and some other situations.

City council members say the ordinace is meant to fight the growing number of unwanted cats and dogs in the city.
