FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Republican Senate hopeful Matt Bevin says criticism of his comments about cockfighting is just noise designed to distract voters from the issues of jobs and the economy.

Bevin says he will release a detailed jobs plan this week. He says the plan is in response to his Republican primary opponent, Sen. Mitch McConnell, telling a newspaper it was not his job to bring employment to one eastern Kentucky county. McConnell said his comments were taken out of context.

It was the first attack by Bevin against McConnell since revelations that Bevin told the crowd at a cockfighting rally that he did not think cockfighting should be outlawed.

McConnell and Bevin will face off in a May 20 primary. The winner will likely take on Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in November.
