Mercer University football defeats its first opponent in more than 70 years Saturday as fans celebrate the return of the team.

More than 12,000 fans wearing orange and black packed Anderson Stadium, to watch the team play Reinhardt University.  The attendance is the most ever for a Mercer athletic event according to the sports department.

Many people came to watch the return of football to the gridiron after being on hiatus for 72 years. Tailgating was in full swing on campus and Mercer Village before the first kick off. Adding to the excitement was Pappy Boynton, 93, who played on Mercer’s football team in 1941. The last year the university had the sport. He walked on the field with his family while the crowd cheered.

"I never thought I see it happen but it's been great," Boynton said.
