Three Monroe County Sheriff's Deputies were honored Friday winning the National Sheriff Association's Medal of Valor.

In front of a packed Monroe County Courtroom, Lt. Brad Freeman, Sgt. Mike Hull, Deputy Chad Beck were bestowed the medals by Monroe County Sheriff J.C. Bittick.

The three were nominated for the award for saving a man's life after witnessing a traffic accident on  I-75 while returning from a training session in Atlanta. Hull and Beck declined to comment, but Freeman says he can still remember running across several lanes of traffic to help the man who was pinned in his blazing car by a tractor trailer.

"Needed to do something at that point, had to do something or the guy was going to perish," Freeman said.

The three helped extinguish a fire, and were able to keep the man alive until emergency responders got to the scene. Freeman says it's all part of the job.

"We get an extraordinary amount of training, probably more so than anybody in the Middle Georgia area, you know a lot of it has to do with the fact that the training center is right here, we do get a lot and we do put it into action when need be," Freeman said.

Freeman, a 26 year veteran of the force says he's honored to win the award, but he says it's just a reflection on the good work done by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

"I'm not going to say this is just another day, but I believe any officer in this area would have done what we did," Freeman said.
