WASHINGTON (AP) — Dozens of leading news organizations are protesting White House rules that sometimes keep photojournalists from taking pictures and video of President Barack Obama performing official duties.

The media coalition sent a letter to White House press secretary Jay Carney on Thursday listing a number of recent examples in which photographers weren't allowed to cover newsworthy presidential events because the administration said they were "private" occasions. Yet the White House released its own photos of the same events.

The coalition, which includes The Associated Press, wants an immediate meeting with Carney on increasing press access.

At the same time, the heads of the American Society of News Editors and the Associated Press Media Editors are urging their members to stop using photos and video distributed by the White House.
