PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NFL has agreed to spend close to $800 million to diagnose and compensate potentially hundreds of retired players who may be suffering from dementia and other brain disorders they blame on concussions from their time in the league. The settlement, which still has to be approved by a federal judge, comes just days before the first game of the 2013 season. DETROIT (AP) — Torii Hunter hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Detroit a 7-6 win over Oakland. Hunter connected off of the Athletics' Grand Balfour who came on in the ninth with a three-run lead. The victory kept Detroit from being swept in the four-game series. DETROIT (AP) — Detroit's Miguel Cabrera is listed as day-to-day after suffering an abdomen injury that forced him to leave today's game against Oakland. The reigning American League MVP and Triple Crown winner suffered the injury making an awkward slide trying to stretch a single into a double. NEW YORK (AP) — Defending champion and top-seeded Serena Williams reached the third round of the U.S. Open with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Galina Voskoboeva (ga-LEE'-nuh vohs-koh-BOY'-eh-vuh) of Kazakhstan. Williams has lost only four games in her two matches. She plays Yaroslava Shvedova (yah-roh-SLAH'-vuh SHVEH'-doh -vuh) in the third round. NORTON, Mass. (AP) —Tiger Woods showed no signs of the back pain that brought him to his knees Sunday at The Barclays when he played the Pro-Am today at the Deutsche (DOY'-chuh) Bank Championship. The world's top-ranked golfer took full, powerful swings with the driver at the TPC Boston, and he had no trouble gouging shots from the deep rough. The second of the FedEx Cup playoff tournaments start tomorrow.
