ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) — A rattlesnake bite proved deadly for a northeast Alabama man, which experts say is very rare. The Anniston Star reports (http://bit.ly/17bH0Ti ) that 53-year-old Daniel F. Mitchell was bitten by a rattlesnake Sept. 20 in Salem, which is near the Georgia state line. He died in a hospital on Tuesday, four days after the bite. Piedmont Rescue Squad Chief Phillip Winkles said Mitchell went into cardiac arrest during an ambulance ride to the hospital the day he was bitten. Winkles said Mitchell was given antivenin and resuscitated but he was unresponsive. Snake bite deaths are very uncommon in the U.S. The website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are between 7,000 and 8,000 venomous snake bites across the country each year, but only about five deaths. ___ Information from: The Anniston Star, http://www.annistonstar.com/
