WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says there's evidence that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile launched from an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by Russian-backed separatists. Speaking at the White House Friday, Obama called for a "credible international investigation" to determine the exact circumstances. Armed rebels accompanied the first international team to inspect the site Friday, allowing the investigators only a superficial look at the scene before ordering them to leave.
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The human cost of the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 is hitting home around the world as the identities of the victims are revealed. The 298 people killed came from 13 countries. They included an acclaimed AIDS researcher from Amsterdam, a nun and teacher from Sydney, a Dutch senator and a World Health Organization spokesman. The plane took off from Amsterdam, and most of the passengers were Dutch. One was a dual U.S.-Dutch citizen.
PATEROS, Wash. (AP) — The Carlton Complex fire has blackened more than 260 square miles of Washington state and continues to grow. The blaze has destroyed 100 homes in the city of Pateros, and it's now forcing the residents of a two more communities to leave their homes. The Okanogan County sheriff says "basically ... the whole town" of Malott is being evacuated, and those living in outlying areas of Brewster are being advised to leave as well.
BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip (AP) — As Israel continues to press its offensive in Gaza, the Palestinian death toll has grown to nearly 300. The U.N. says minors make up one in five of the Palestinians killed in Israel's 11-day of bombardment. Half the of the 1.7 million people living in the densely populated Gaza Strip are under age 18. The Israeli military says it's doing its utmost to spare civilians by urging residents to leave areas that are about to be shelled or bombed. It accuses Hamas militants of using civilians as human shields.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani intelligence officials say a U.S. drone has fired two missiles at a compound in a northwestern tribal region, killing eight militants. Two officials say the strike happened in North Waziristan where the Pakistani military is carrying out a major offensive against militants. It was the second strike this week. On Wednesday, a suspected U.S. drone killed 15 militants there.
