It's only getting hotter here in middle Georgia but people in Bibb County aren't able to take a dip in their public pools just yet. Mechanical delays and staff shortages top the list of problems hindering Macon- Bibb County Parks and Recreation. But Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation workers are trying to change that, starting with Memorial Park, but Director Dale Dougherty says his office is facing more than the usual mechanical issues. "We're short on a number of life guards that we need to even get several of the pools open at this point." The pools are facing a slew of issues from moving pumps and motors to resurfacing, problems that keeps swimmers from jumping in. Macon's city pools and other recreation functions were handed over to the Bibb County government this year in a precursor to consolidated government, and while it's taking longer to open, the Commissioners are focusing on the future. Money for any renovations would have to come from SPLOST funds. While parks and rec try to fix the problems, Dougherty says the lack of investment over the years into the pool facilities has finally caught up. "When you're looking at mechanical, you're talking about pumps and motors, things that cost thousands of dollars, beyond just leaks here and there and it's a real hindrance in getting the pools open.”
