Around 100 parents, teachers, and community members showed up Tuesday night for the Bibb County School System's planning session for the new Heard Elementary School building.

School stakeholders were able to meet with designers and school officials to give input on what they want to see in the new building which will be built right next to the existing structure.

Heard Elementary Teacher Carla Cox says she has a few items she wants to be incorporated into the final design. Those include an auditorium separate from the cafeteria, adequate teaching space, and a new facility that keeps the cosmetic historical integrity of the old building.

"It's important that Heard is not just a cookie cutter school per se, that it's not just a basic layout that it is custom built for Heard," Cox said.

A "quick fact" sheet produced by school officials says construction on the new building is scheduled to begin January 2014 and wrap up December 2014. The facility will have 48 instructional units and be able to accommodate 750 students, with the ability to expand to 900 if needed in the future.

The new school will be built while the existing school is occupied.
