Just after 6 a.m. yesterday Macon Bibb firefighters responded to 120 Comer Terrace Lane in Payne City.
A vacant duplex with no utilities somehow caught fire sending extremely thick smoke throughout the area.
Payne City is an old mill town so many of the homes are close together and made out of older wood that burns easily, leaving firefighters concerned the flames would spread to other homes quickly. A house next door to the duplex did get some damage with melted siding, but firefighters kept most of it contained to the main house.
Captain Joseph Hewitt with Macon Bibb fire tells us the cause of the fire is undetermined right now, but it is suspicious since there were no utilities on site to start a fire.
Fire crews stayed to monitor the home well into the night for hot spots. Stay tuned to WGXA for the latest.
