Donnie Haralson died Tuesday night after a lengthy battle with cancer. Harrelson, 58 years old, was elected sheriff of crisp county in 1988. He began his law enforcement career as a cordele police officer in 1977. His accolades span from chairman of the criminal justice coordinating council to president of the peace officers association of Georgia. He had a positive impact on the lives of thousands.
Harrelson took a proactive approach to law enforcement, rather than sit back and respond to crime. He started a junior deputy program, drug prevention program, a ged program for inmates, and many more. Cordele residents of over 60 years say he was the best sheriff to serve in crisp county. "He was the best sheriff that ever been in this town and he treated everybody fair."
