TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — A renegade Libyan general's group has called for parliament to be suspended after it launched an attack in Tripoli.
A man in a military uniform read a statement on behalf of Gen. Khalifa Hifter's group late Sunday night on a Libyan television channel.
The man, Gen. Mokhtar Farnana, said they assigned a 60-member constituent's assembly to take over for parliament.
Farnana said Libya's current government would act on an emergency basis. He did not elaborate.
He also said Sunday's attack on Libya's parliament was not a coup, but "fighting by people's choice."
