ATLANTA (AP) — A city spokeswoman says a major thoroughfare on Atlanta's east side will likely be closed until early next week as crews continue attempts to repair a broken water main.

The break near DeKalb Avenue and Elmira Place was first reported shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday, leading to the closure of DeKalb Avenue. Repairs were made and the road reopened Thursday night, but water began leaking again and the street was once again shut down before dawn Friday.

Now, rain has complicated the repair project.

Atlanta Watershed Management spokeswoman Scheree Rawles says that crews will have to replace wet fill-in material with dry material. She tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/RyvrSs) that workers will also have to pour more concrete and patch it with asphalt after the concrete has cured.
