Savannah city leaders mulling Sunday alcohol sales

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Savannah City Council is considering legislation allowing bars to operate seven days a week.

The Savannah Morning News ( ) reported that current city laws require businesses selling alcohol on Sundays to earn more than half their revenue from food sales.

Alderman Tony Thomas said Monday that the regulation doesn't make sense, considering retail stores are now allowed to sell alcohol on Sundays.

The newspaper reports Sunday alcohol sales had been illegal until Savannah voters approved changing the law in a 2011 referendum.

City bar owners have also expressed concerns over whether they'll be allowed to sell alcohol the day before St. Patrick's Day — which falls on a Monday in 2014. Visitors are expected in the city throughout the holiday weekend.
