BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer has joined cable news channel MSNBC as a contributor.

The Democrat was introduced in his new role on Wednesday during an appearance on "The Ed Show" for a segment on the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline. The project would ship oil from Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries.

Schweitzer has appeared regularly on various news programs since leaving office in January 2013.

He has visited the key Democratic caucus state of Iowa but has made no formal announcement about whether he might run for president in 2016. He has told The Associated Press that a run is something he might consider.

After serving the maximum two terms as Montana governor, Schweitzer led a corporate board takeover at Stillwater Mining Co. and is now chairman of the company's board of directors.
