NEW YORK (AP) — The great-grandmother of a 7-year-old New York City girl who was stabbed in a public housing building's elevator says she's recovering at home with the help of a teddy bear that sings "smile though your heart is aching."

Regenia Trevathan said Saturday that Mikayla Capers is still in a "fragile" state after she and her 6-year-old friend P.J. Avitto were attacked June 1 in their Brooklyn building. P.J. died.

Trevathan says Mikayla needs time to heal from the trauma of suffering 16 stab wounds and losing her friend.

A man was indicted last week on charges of murder and other crimes. He's being investigated in connection with two other recent attacks. He had been released from prison May 23 after serving five years for attempted murder and assault.
