The Second Annual Houston County Special Olympics Winter Games are underway.

The games this year are being held in the Veterans High School gym in Kathleen.

About 350 students have signed up for the basketball competition which includes students from Houston County elementary, middle and high schools.

Coordinator leslie allen says taking part in special olympics improves students' motor skills, coordination, and balance. She says it also improves social and interpersonal skills.

The Houston County event will allow student athletes the chance to qualify for the state Winter Special Olympic Games in Atlanta later this month.
