HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — A federal judge has scheduled a Dec. 16 trial for a man charged after authorities said a traffic stop in Lamar County netted more than 21 kilograms of nearly pure methamphetamine. Obidio Santos-Alas was scheduled to plead guilty Oct. 23, but his hearing was postponed when he asked for a continuance. It wasn't immediately clear why he decided not to plead guilty that day. U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett set the trial date on Thursday. Another defendant, Reina Chamorro, a 45-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen from Cuba, pleaded guilty Oct. 23 in U.S. District Court in Hattiesburg to one count of interstate travel in aid of an unlawful activity. She faces up to five years in prison at sentencing on Jan. 16.
