MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) — Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro has died.

Paez Vilaro was a self-trained painter, sculptor, screenwriter, musician and architect who championed Afro-Uruguayan Candombe music and dance, created colorful murals in dozens of cities around the world and built a huge "living sculpture" that became an iconic 50-room hotel. He was 90.

Paez Vilaro's son "Carlitos" said he died Monday at home in "Casapueblo," the sprawling structure outside Punta del Este that doubled as a museum and cultural center.

The son told Uruguay's Channel 12 that his father worked until his dying day, and "was lucid, impeccable, a model for everyone."

The artist's son was among 16 survivors from an Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes in 1972.
