Father's Day is coming up and many are spending time honoring the father figures in their lives.

Joanna Balcom, a mother of two, says a father plays an important role in a child's life.

"Kids need that father figure in their lives to help and guide them, what's the right decisions, what's the right choices," Balcom said.

Some define the word 'father' as someone who has always had their backs.

Sandra Reynolds says her father has always been there for her.

"I have a great dad, I love him very much, he's always been there for me, he's always been there for my kids, he raised my kids," Reynolds said.

The crisis of fatherhood is real and many children grow up fatherless.

The number of American families without fathers has more than doubled in the past 40 years to about one in every four families.

A 20-14 study of more than 40 million American children shows the presence of a father in the home is the strongest determinant for the upward mobility of a family and its' members.

Statistics also show children with fathers in the home are less likely to be homeless, run away, develop behavior disorders, drop out of school, become incarcerated or commit suicide.
