Update: Divers Find Drowning Vicitm in Oconee River

Update: Thursday 9:45 p.m.

Wheeler County Sheriff Maurice Johnson said divers found the remains of a young man who drowned in the Oconee River about 9:15 p.m. Thursday.

A witness told rescuers the victim was swimming when he went under the water and never resurfaced.

Sheriff Johnson plans to release the victim's name Friday after all family members have been notified.

He said swimmers should avoid swimming in rivers due to currents and debris.

Update: Thursday at 5:15 p.m.

The Wheeler County Sheriff's Office is investigating a drowning on the Oconee River.
Sheriff Maurice Johnson told WGXA boats went in the water around 5:15 p.m. Thursday to look for a man who went under and did not resurface.  

Johnson did not know the victim's name.
